5 car trends to look out for in 2026

As Singapore moves into 2026, the local car scene is entering a phase of change rather than sudden disruption. After several years of sharp shifts in prices, technology and buyer behaviour, the coming year looks set to be shaped by steadier growth, stronger competition and evolving consumer expectations.

From electrification to changing ownership patterns, these are the five car-related trends that are likely to influence buying decisions and industry strategies in the year ahead.

One clear development is the continued mainstreaming of electric vehicles. EVs are no longer seen as niche or experimental, and public confidence has improved significantly as charging infrastructure expands and product quality rises. Even if government incentives become less generous, buyers are increasingly attracted by lower running costs, quieter driving experiences and a growing range of models across different price points. As technology matures and manufacturing becomes more efficient, affordability is expected to improve further.

Another trend to watch is the growing presence of Chinese car brands. Over the past few years, these brands have moved from curiosity to serious contenders, supported by competitive pricing, strong features and rapid model updates. Consumer acceptance has risen alongside greater visibility on the roads, and the momentum suggests that Chinese marques will continue to gain market share as they expand their local line-ups.

SUVs also show no signs of losing their grip on buyer preferences. Practicality, higher seating positions and flexible cabin layouts continue to appeal to families and individual drivers alike. As more compact and electrified SUVs enter the market, this body style is likely to strengthen its dominance rather than fade, especially as manufacturers focus product development on this segment.

The private-hire vehicle population is another area under close observation. While growth has slowed compared to earlier years, private-hire cars remain a significant part of Singapore’s transport ecosystem. High ownership costs and policy scrutiny may limit rapid expansion, but the segment is unlikely to shrink dramatically given its role in meeting commuting and mobility needs.

Finally, COE premiums remain the biggest uncertainty for buyers. While there is hope that increased supply from deregistered vehicles may bring some relief, structural factors and regulatory adjustments mean large price drops are unlikely. Most industry observers expect fluctuations rather than a return to historically low levels, making long-term planning more important for prospective car owners.

Toward the end of 2026, electric vehicles accounted for nearly half of all new car registrations, Chinese brands made up close to one-third of new sales, SUVs represented more than half of all new cars, the private-hire fleet reached its highest level to date, and COE prices remained firmly in five-figure territory. Together, these indicators suggest that 2026 will not be about dramatic shifts, but about consolidation — a market that feels more familiar, yet continues to evolve in meaningful ways.
