Audi Unleashes 630bhp Plug-In Hybrid RS5, Redefining Performance

Move over Mercedes and BMW — Audi is bringing a new high-performance contender to Singapore with its latest RS5, now offered in both Sedan and Avant body styles. The RS5 marks a major evolution in Audi’s performance line-up, combining electrification with the brand’s traditional V6 power.

Unlike previous generations, the new RS5 succeeds both the RS4 Avant and the earlier RS5 Sportback/Coupe, with the A4 nameplate temporarily retired from the range. The RS5 now takes the form of either a four-door Sedan or an Avant, leaving coupe enthusiasts behind.

First-Ever High-Performance Plug-In Hybrid

The highlight of the RS5 is its status as Audi’s first high-performance plug-in hybrid. At its core is an upgraded 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine producing 503bhp and 600Nm of torque, enhanced with innovations such as a modified Miller cycle, a redesigned intake system, and advanced water-to-air intercoolers. Complementing the engine is a 130kW electric motor integrated into a hybridised eight-speed gearbox, powered by a 25.9kWh battery. On paper, the RS5 can travel up to 84km on electric power alone, offering practicality for short daily commutes or track-day journeys.

System output reaches an impressive 630bhp and 825Nm of torque, propelling the RS5 from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, despite the additional weight from its electrified components. While this places it ahead of some combustion-only rivals like the BMW M3 Competition, it remains just behind the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance in straight-line acceleration.

Cutting-Edge Driving Dynamics

Audi has introduced a world-first electro-mechanical torque vectoring system on the rear axle, known as ‘quattro all-wheel drive with Dynamic Torque Control’. This system continuously adjusts torque between the rear wheels every five milliseconds, improving cornering grip, responsiveness, and directional stability.

The chassis has been fully revised to support this advanced drivetrain, with updated front and rear axles, RS sport suspension with twin-valve shock absorbers, and RS-tuned steering. Standard 20-inch wheels are fitted, with optional 21-inch RS ceramic brakes to reduce weight while boosting stopping power. The RS5 also features brake-by-wire technology, prioritising regenerative braking to improve efficiency.

Aggressive Exterior and Distinctive Design

Visually, the RS5 makes a bold statement. Both Sedan and Avant are 40mm wider than the standard A5, with enlarged wheel arches, a prominent Singleframe grille, and RS-specific three-dimensional honeycomb patterns. The rear diffuser is aggressive, flanked by twin matte oval exhausts, and the Sedan features a subtle ducktail spoiler. RS-specific DRL signatures evoke chequered flags, reinforcing the car’s sporty identity.

Driver-Focused Interior

Inside, the RS5 offers five interior design options and a fully customised MMI infotainment system. RS-specific displays show engine RPM, speed, shift lights, and track-focused performance data, including G-forces, tyre temperatures, lap times, and drivetrain metrics. Audi has ensured that the cabin remains immersive for both daily driving and track use.

Availability and Production

The RS5 Sedan and Avant are produced at Audi Sport’s headquarters in Neckarsulm, Germany. European orders will open in the first quarter of 2026, with deliveries expected mid-year. Singapore enthusiasts can anticipate the RS5 to arrive before the end of 2026, though official local dates have yet to be confirmed.

With electrified performance, world-first driving technologies, and unmistakable styling, the new Audi RS5 redefines what a hybrid performance car can be, combining speed, handling, and cutting-edge engineering for a thrilling driving experience.
